The United States has told\u00a0Israel\u00a0of its concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza, the White House said Wednesday, after President Joe Biden warned Israel it could lose support over \u201cindiscriminate bombing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Biden\u2019s comments on Tuesday were his strongest criticism yet after resolutely standing up for Israel\u2019s right to defend itself after the October 7 attacks by\u00a0Hamas.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had concerns,\u201d National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said when asked about Biden\u2019s remarks to donors to his reelection campaign at an event in Washington.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we\u2019ve expressed those concerns about the prosecution of this military campaign, even while acknowledging that it\u2019s Hamas that started this,\u201d Kirby told reporters.<\/p>\n
Biden himself had laid out those concerns \u201cpublicly and privately\u201d with Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu, Kirby said.<\/p>\n
Israel had shown a \u201cclear intent\u201d to reduce civilian casualties, including carrying out fewer air strikes since it resumed its offensive after a ceasefire with Hamas broke down, Kirby added.<\/p>\n
But he added: \u201cSometimes in war the best laid plans don\u2019t get executed the way you want.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kirby also played down Biden\u2019s comments that Netanyahu had to \u201cchange\u201d his policy opposing a two-state solution, and that the Israeli premier\u2019s hard-right government was \u201cmaking it very difficult for him to move.\u201d<\/p>\n
